'ooyim̓' ʔuɣm (Gather things for a special purpose)

Place: Cooks Ferry Indian Band - Shackan Indian Band.

Travis Oppenheim, MSS FNSW, Cheryl Rule, MSS FNSW, Citxʷ Nlaka'pamux Assembly & community members from the 8 surrounding bands gathered together to learn about significant Nlaka'pamux teachings. We all met at the Cook's Ferry Gym at 10 am and gathered Spetcin- Indian Hemp in a near by field. The group then visited Pictographs along the way to Shackan Band Hall. After an enjoyable lunch & introductions, we then painted Pictographs onto t-shirts. Elder Jack McIntyre used Cottonwood Bud Oil, Cedar Leaf Oil to make a Salve for each participant. Thank you Citxʷ Nlaka'pamux Assembly for allowing SD#58 to participate in these important cultural teachings.

Aboriginal Youth Voice Conference

Keynote speaker Justin Young aka THUNDER SKY shares his story with students at our Aboriginal Youth Voices Conference. Originally from Bloodvein First Nation in Manitoba, Thunder Sky walked from Kamloops, B.C to Bloodvein, Man. He calls his journey his ‘Walk of Healing’. He talked about resilience, forgiveness, the struggles he endured to make the trip and how it shaped him as a person.

 

Annual SD#58 Student Powwow

Each year the First Nations Education department hosts an annual school district wide Student Powwow. This is done to share a small dose of our beautiful Aboriginal cultural experience. The powwow is hosted in rotation by each of the respective schools in the district, this year's host will be Collettville Elementary.

 

The making of the FNSW Traditional “Staff”

A collective decision was made to make a SD FNSW traditional "Staff" Hank Yamelst was chosen for the job. Greta Brown tracked each step of Hank's work. Below is a download of each step.
